Due to June 1 being a Saturday, the Office of Admissions will assist anyone experiencing technical difficulties or needing other assistance on Monday, June 3. Rest assured that this will not affect your ability to commit to the UO.

About the minor

The UO Department of Classics introduces students to foundational concepts of Western culture and literature through the study of Roman history and culture. Undergraduate students can minor in Latin, giving them the opportunity to explore Roman history and culture through concentrated study on Latin language as well as related courses. Students read literature, philosophy, and history texts both in the original Latin and in translation.

  • Classical civilization minors can access the UO’s digital Lowenstam Collection of Ancient Western Art and Archaeology to enhance their study and research opportunities.
  • Students in classics can attend and present research at the Classical Association of the Pacific Northwest’s annual conference, often hosted at the University of Oregon.
  • The Department of Classics is also active in the Archaeological Institute of America, which presents an annual series of presentations from visiting archaeologists and historians.
  • The department has connections with archaeological excavations and summer field schools.
